Day of Travel

Posted by Aaron Lowe on 6. November 2008 13:25

Well first day of the trip!  British Airways flight left right on time at 5:05 pm headed to Heathrow.  First international flight in a few years, and both flights were on a 777.  I ended up watching 3 Days of Condor followed by Catch Me if You Can (the scene where Di Caprio fools Hanks into thinking he’s a Secret Service agent is classic), while my baby mama watched Baby Mama. :)

We did have a bit of a scare going through O’Hare security, my wife “lost” here boarding pass between the beginning of the security line and the actual metal detectors.  She ended up finding it on the floor a couple minutes later, but it was an interesting couple minutes as you can imagine.

BTW, thumbs up to O'Hare for having free wi-fi for their international terminal, but thumbs down for not having any power outlets, which meant that between the flight time and the time spent at the airport I had to budget my laptop battery.

Second big scare was that we were supposed to have a couple hour layover in Heathrow.  However for some reason even though we didn’t have to go through customs because we weren’t coming into the country, we still had to go through another security check.  This meant that we had to go up 2 escalators, take a tram to the main terminal, go through a line to go up an escalator which ended up in another line to a security checkpoint, then go down an elevator to take another tram to go up an escalator to go over to the gate to go down another escalator – all of this happened in the same terminal.  As a result we were the last ones on the plane and didn’t get to the gate until it had officially closed.  Fun.

Anywho we got on and sat down for another four and a half hour flight from London to Tel Aviv and then a 2 hour bus ride to the hotel on the Sea of Galilee.  So all in all we left our house at 1:00 pm on Wednesday and got to our hotel at 7:00 pm Thursday night, which equates to about 22 hours of travelling with an 8 hour time difference and 3 airplane meals.  So we were disappointed that we already missed the visit to Caesarea due to the timing of getting in.

However on the bright side of things, the hotel has buffet breakfasts and dinners(kosher of course)!  So ate pretty good and getting ready to turn in and try and get my internal clock adjusted.  Getting up early tomorrow as we’re headed going to the Mt. of Beatitudes and Jordan River.
